South Africa’s ODI captain Temba Bavuma has indicated that Dewald Brevis may make his ODI debut in the upcoming three-match series against Australia.
Having made his T20I debut in 2023 and his Test debut earlier this year against Zimbabwe, Brevis is now in line to receive his ODI cap.
“It’s always exciting when you see the young faces. Obviously, the big talk has been about Brevis – putting up his hand and showing what he is capable of. I’m excited to see what he can bring to the one-day format as well,” Bavuma said on the eve of the series opener.
For Brevis, it was a memorable series with the bat. The right-handed batter finished the series as the highest run-scorer, amassing 180 runs in three innings at a strike rate of 206.9. In the second match, he became the second-fastest T20I centurion for South Africa, reaching the milestone in just 41 balls and finishing unbeaten on 125 – the highest individual T20I score for South Africa. In the next game, he smashed a half-century, which went in vain as South Africa lost both the match and the series.
The first of the three ODIs will be played in Cairns on Tuesday.
