India’s legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar refused to comment on Yashasvi Jaiswal’s omission from the 15-member Asia Cup 2025 squad. Speaking to India Today, Gavaskar urged everyone to back the team that has been selected.

“You can only pick XI in the match and you can only pick 15 in the squad. Somebody has to miss out, that’s just one of those in Indian cricket. No point in discussing whether A or B or C should’ve been there. This is now our team. We can all have our opinions before the selection committee picks the team, but once the team is picked, we should back it fully. We shouldn’t be saying A should’ve been there or B should’ve been there. That only creates controversy, which the players don’t need,” Gavaskar said.

Jaiswal last played a T20I on July 30, 2024. He was also the back-up opener for India during their successful T20 World Cup 2024 campaign. Hence, his absence from the main squad has surprised many fans.

The young opener enjoyed a brilliant IPL 2025 season, scoring 559 runs in 14 matches at an average of 43 and a strike rate of 159.71. His tally included six half-centuries, with a highest score of 75.

The 23-year-old also impressed in the recently concluded Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy in England, where he scored 411 runs in five matches at an average of 41.10. He registered two centuries in the series, with a highest score of 118.

In his T20I career so far, Jaiswal has played 23 matches and scored 723 runs at an average of 36.15 and a strike rate of 164.31. His record includes five half-centuries and one century, with a highest score of 100.

However, Jaiswal has been included in the stand-by list of players for the tournament.
