England’s ODI and T20I captain Harry Brook has praised fast bowler Sonny Baker, saying his impressive performances against some of the world’s top batters have earned him a spot in the upcoming ODI series against South Africa. The three-match ODI series will begin on September 2, followed by a three-match T20I series starting September 10.

Baker, who is currently playing for Manchester Originals in The Hundred Men’s competition, recently grabbed attention by claiming his first hat-trick — which came against Brook’s own team, the Northern Superchargers.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Brook hailed Baker’s selection, calling him a future prospect for England.

“There is obviously a reason why we have picked him,” Brook said. “He is bowling at high pace, has got skill and has really impressed against some of the international players – Kane Williamson, Warner, Smith, Bairstow. He has put them under pressure in the powerplay and that is something we are looking forward to watching in the future. He has the ability to get wickets and take hat-tricks.”

England have also included bowling all-rounder Rehan Ahmed in both the ODI and T20 squads. Brook highlighted Ahmed’s progress with the bat as a big positive.

“He is a fantastic talent and has gone up a level this year with the bat. I am glad he is batting in the top three for Rockets as well,” Brook noted.

Meanwhile, 21-year-old all-rounder Jacob Bethell will replace Brook in the upcoming three-match T20I series in Ireland, where he is set to become the youngest player to captain England in an international match. Brook shared his confidence in Bethell’s leadership qualities.

“Beth has great potential to be a captain in future. He thinks very well about the game and is always trying to move it forward, like I am. We think similar. I think he will be an aggressive captain. He is always looking to put opposition batters and bowlers under pressure. That is what we have asked for and he does that in abundance,” Brook concluded.
