Former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa has voiced out his disappointment on the Indian selection committee for excluding Shreyas Iyer from India’s 15-member squad for Asia Cup 2025.Notably, Iyer played a key role in India’s victory in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 as the leading scorer of the team with 243 runs in five innings where the Men in Blue won the final against New Zealand by four wickets.
The Indian batter’s form continued in the Indian Premier League (IPL) this season making his debut for the Punjab Kings (PBKS) franchise and as the captain of the team. Under his captaincy PKBS made it to the second IPL final but lost to first-time winners Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). In 17 matches played, he scored 604 runs at the strike rate of 175.07.
Criticizing Iyer’s absence from the T20I squad on his social media, Uthappa wrote, “There are around 18 T20Is to go before India play the next #T20WC; not having #ShreyasIyer who was integral in helping you win the CT seems strange. But one can only hope that he gets into this side soon coz he deserves it! I hope they have communicated to him about his exclusion.”
With 1104 runs in 51 T20Is, Iyer last appeared in T20Is in Australia’s tour of India in 2023 where he scored 61 runs in two matches.
During the press conference of Asia Cup squad announcement, Indian chief selector Ajit Agarkar addressed on Iyer’s absence stating that only 15 players could be picked for the tournament.
“With regards to Shreyas, not his fault, nor is it ours. It’s just that you can pick 15 and at the moment you’ll have to wait for his chance,” Agarkar mentioned.
