South Africa’s spinner Keshav Maharaj is back at the No.1 position in the ICC Men’s ODI Bowling Rankings. In his first ODI since the 2025 Champions Trophy, Maharaj took his maiden five-wicket haul against Australia to help his team win in Cairns. With this performance, he has moved past Sri Lanka’s Maheesh Theekshana to claim the top spot.
“It’s a special feeling, I think, to be ranked as the No.1 bowler in the world. You think about the years and years of hard work, and see it come together to be able to earn the title,” Maharaj told ICC Digital via Cricket South Africa.
The left-arm spinner had earlier reached the No.1 spot during the 2023 World Cup. Since then, the 35-year-old hasn’t dropped out of the top five in the rankings.
“To get it [the No.1 spot] back is even more special. I haven’t played ODI cricket in a while, so it’s nice to get back on the park and obviously help the team get back to winning ways.”
Making a comeback after recovering from a groin injury, Maharaj showed no signs of struggle in Cairns.
Talking about his return, Maharaj said: “Really thoroughly enjoyed it. First game back after a long time, and to be able to put in a performance like that just keeps me grounded, keeps me hungry, and keeps me wanting more.”
Maharaj also praised young batting sensation Dewald Brevis, who was the top run-scorer in the T20I series.
“I think he’s [Brevis] a super special talent… has the ability to clear the boundary at will — not many others are able to do so,” he said.
South Africa currently lead the ODI series 1–0, with the second game scheduled to be played in Mackay on 22 August.
