India’s great off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin revealed the reason behind his shock retirement after the Brisbane Test in Australia in 2024. Speaking to Rahul Dravid on his YouTube channel, Ashwin said that since he was left out of many games in the overseas tours, he decided to retire.

“I think it was just the time, and where I stood in my life, right? I think I was pretty old, I must admit,” Ashwin said. “But going on tours, and you know, having to just sit out a lot more, eventually got to me.”

Ashwin retired just after the third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, which was held in Brisbane. He revealed that spending more time with the family was another reason behind his decision to retire.

“I mean, not in terms of not wanting to contribute to the team, but you’re thinking if I would rather be at home, spending time with children,” revealed Ashein. “They are also growing up, and what am I actually doing?”

The legendary spinner also added that he always wanted to retire in his mid-30s. “In my head, I always decided that I would retire at 34-35.”

Ashwin retired as the second-highest wicket taker for India in the red-ball format, just behind Anil Kumble. He took 537 wickets in 106 matches at an average of 24, which included 37 fifers in an innings and eight 10 wicket-hauls in a match. His best bowling figures in an innings were 7/59. Kumble took 619 wickets in his test career.
