Amidst the rumours of Shreyas Iyer being considered as the future ODI captain, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Devajit Saikia has denied the claims, saying that there have been no discussions about them.

As reported by Dainik Jagran, Iyer is being considered as Rohit Sharma’s successor as 50-over captain. Since the report came out, there have been intense discussions and debates around that.

“That’s news to me. There have been no such discussions,” Saikia told Hindustan Times.

Since playing in the Champions Trophy, Iyer hasn’t played in any format for India. He has been on the sidelines. In India’s last ODI assignment, which was the Champions Trophy, Iyer was India’s top run-scorer and overall second-highest run-getter in the tournament. The right-handed batter amassed 243 runs in five matches at an average of 48.60. His tally included two fifties with the best score of 79.

Iyer has been a regular part of India’s 50-over setup but hasn’t been given a chance to lead. With captaincy credentials, Iyer is one of the strong contenders to lead the team in the future. However, as things stand right now, Rohit Sharma is the captain of the team and Shubman Gill is his deputy.

India’s next ODI assignment is in Australia, where they’ll play a three-match ODI series, starting October 19. According to multiple reports, the upcoming tour could be Rohit’s last in international cricket. When the squad for the Australia series is announced, then there will be clarity around India’s leadership group.
