The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has revamped the structure of domestic cricket for the upcoming season. The new season will start from August 28 with the Duleep Trophy in Bengaluru.
One of the biggest changes is the introduction of a plate group in all one–day tournaments, which includes the Vijay Hazare Trophy for senior men. These competitions will now have four elite groups and one plate group. Until now, this format was used only in Ranji Trophy.
The BCCI has also changed the promotion and regulation rules from the elite and plate groups. Now on, only one team will be promoted and only one will be relegated, according to a report in Times of India. In the earlier system, this number was two.
The formats of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy for men and the senior women’s T20 tournament have also been revised. These events will now have a super leaguestage instead of knockouts which will give the teams more matches and opportunities.
The junior women’s tournaments will now have five elite groups and one plate group. With these updates, the BCCI aims to bring uniformity to the domesticformat, while also giving teams more competitive balance and opportunities.
