PBKS Coach Baffled by Iyer Snub: ‘Extraordinary Selection’

Former Australia cricketer Brad Haddin was left surprised by the strange decision made by the selectors to leave Shreyas Iyer out of India’s squad for the upcoming Asia Cup.

Iyer amassed over 600 runs at a strike rate in excess of 170, making a strong case for his inclusion. The 30-year-old led his team, Punjab Kings (PBKS), to the final, where they lost to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). Despite a great run of form with the bat, he was omitted from the 15-member squad — a decision that has left many fans and former players searching for answers. Among them is Haddin, who worked with the Punjab Kings in IPL 2025 as assistant coach.

“Well, one, leadership qualities. Two, the style of player he is under pressure, and he’s someone that everyone plays better with when he’s in the team. I had no idea. I first thought, when I was reading it, that he was injured — but he’s not. So, it’s a strange decision for me because he brings so much to the game. I actually thought he was going to be captain. Extraordinary selection,” Haddin said on the Willow Talk podcast.

Selected in the West Zone squad, Iyer will be playing in the Duleep Trophy, which begins on 28 August. He will have a chance to impress the selectors and earn a recall to the national side for the home Test series against the West Indies in October, which will commence after the Asia Cup.
