Team India’s former off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has said that Cheteshwar Pujara received less attention than what he truly deserved. Speaking on his YouTube channel ‘Ash Ki Baat’, Ashwin said that what Pujara has done for the country is nothing less than what other superstars have achieved.

“What did Cheteshwar Pujara stand for in Indian cricket? I said his contributions are no less than Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Obviously, a lot of people talk about their contributions. The attention is not there,” he said.

Pujara took the responsibility of the number three spot from Rahul Dravid in Test cricket for India. In 103 matches, he scored 7,195 runs at an average of 43.60, including 19 hundreds and 35 fifties, with the best score of an unbeaten 206.

Ashwin pointed out that Pujara’s contribution at No. 3 was very important for the batters who came after him to score runs, including Virat Kohli.

“Not every cricketer gets the attention, but that does not mean their contribution is any less. Pujara’s contribution at No.3, believe it or not, was instrumental in helping Virat Kohli also make a lot of his runs,” Ashwin added.

Pujara was instrumental in many of India’s memorable victories. In India’s historic 2020-21 Australia tour victory, he took many body blows but his spirit was indomitable, and he scored 271 runs in four matches. In the 2018-19 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which India won, he scored 521 runs in four matches and was the highest run-getter.
