Ravichandran Ashwin has retired from the IPL, concluding a distinguished career spanning 16 years in which he represented several franchises. The spin-bowling all-rounder featured in 221 matches, taking 187 wickets at an economy rate of 7.20 and an average of 30.23. His best bowling figures were 4/34. Here are his top three bowling performances in the IPL:
3/16 vs RCB in 2011
In the final of the 2011 IPL against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Chennai Super Kings (CSK) posted a total of 205 while batting first. Ashwin opened the bowling for CSK and claimed the crucial wicket of Chris Gayle for a duck. The Tamil Nadu-based cricketer followed that up with the dismissal of Mayank Agarwal in his next over, putting RCB under immense pressure. He also took a return catch to dismiss RCB captain Daniel Vettori, playing a pivotal role in securing CSK’s second consecutive IPL title.
3/16 vs KKR in 2010
Representing CSK against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Ashwin produced a brilliant spell, dismissing three dangerous batters – Chris Gayle, Brendon McCullum, and David Hussey – to restrict KKR to a modest total, which CSK chased down comfortably. Ashwin was named Player of the Match for his figures of 3/16, delivered at an economy rate of just 4.00.
4/34 vs KXIP in 2016
Playing for Rising Pune Supergiants (RPS) against what was then Kings XI Punjab (KXIP), Ashwin removed both openers – Hashim Amla and Murali Vijay – who had started well. He then claimed the key wicket of Gurkeerat Singh Mann, who had reached a half-century, and later dismissed David Miller cheaply, preventing a late onslaught. Ashwin finished with figures of 4/34 from his four overs, at an economy rate of 8.50.
