NorthEast United FC scripted a golden chapter in their history as the Hon’ble President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, presented them with the prestigious President’s Cup at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The occasion marked a moment of immense pride not just for the Highlanders, but also for Indian football.
The honour followed NorthEast United’s emphatic triumph in the 134th edition of the IndianOil Durand Cup, where they successfully defended their crown by defeating Diamond Harbour FC 6-1 at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan. In doing so, they became the first team in 34 years to retain the fabled trophy, firmly etching their name in the annals of Indian football.
The prize distribution ceremony saw Air Chief Marshal A.P. Singh, Chief of the Air Staff, present the President’s Scroll to the champions. But the crowning moment arrived at Rashtrapati Bhavan, where the team, accompanied by Bollywood actor and club owner John Abraham, received the President’s Cup from the Head of State. Players Redeem Tlang, Gurmeet Singh, Asheer Akhtar, and CEO Mandar Tamhane joined Abraham in accepting the honour on behalf of the club.
Speaking on behalf of the club, Mr. John Abraham expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Hon’ble President for the recognition and lauded the Indian Armed Forces for their pivotal role in preserving the Durand Cup’s glorious legacy. He particularly commended the Eastern Command for elevating the tournament to new heights and for their dedicated efforts in nurturing football talent across the East and North-East, thereby contributing significantly to the broader growth of Indian football.
The President’s Cup itself carries deep historical significance. First introduced by Dr. Rajendra Prasad in 1950, the trophy is permanently awarded to the winning team and features a circular disc atop the Ashoka Lion Capital. It has long symbolised prestige and triumph in Indian football, underscoring the stature of the Durand Cup, the oldest football tournament in Asia.
Earlier in July, President Murmu had unveiled the Durand Cup trophies at Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre, with the Durand Committee promising that the President’s Cup would be conferred in a special ceremony. On Saturday, that promise culminated in a proud moment for NorthEast United and their supporters — a rare honour that will shine forever in the club’s journey.
