Team India unveils jersey for World Para Athletics Championships in New Delhi

Team India Jersey for World Para Athletics Championships Unveiled in New Delhi (PC: PCI)

The World Para Athletics Championships is only a month away and the Paralympic Committee of India has unveiled the official Team India jersey in Delhi. PCI also formally announced a 73-member Indian squad that will represent the nation for the Championships, scheduled to be held from September 27 to October 5 2025.

The unveiling at The Lalit Delhi was host to PCI’s brand ambassador Kangana Ranaut, President Devendra Jhajaria, Head of World Para Athletics Paul Fitzgerald, and several Indian para athletics stars like Preeti Pal, Simran Sharma, Rinku, Dharambir, Devender Jumar, Amisha Rawat, Shreyansh Trivedi, Varun Singh Bhati and Pranav Soorma.

The spotlight was on the two flagbearers, Dharambir and Preeti, who secured a Gold in the men’s Club Throw F51, and two bronze medals respectively, at the 2024 Paris Paralympics.

Kangana, who is also an MP, called the occasion “a special and humbling moment,” adding: “Being part of this moment is truly special. Our para athletes are real heroes who inspire millions through their dedication and strength. The Team India announcement alongside this jersey launch symbolises their hard work, unity, and passion. I am certain they will make the tricolour shine brightly on the global stage.”

PCI President Devendra Jhajharia echoed that sentiment, saying:  “Today’s jersey launch and the announcement of our strong Team India contingent is more than just unveiling a uniform; it is a celebration of courage, determination, and the spirit of our para athletes. Each athlete represents India’s resilience and pride, and we are confident that this team will deliver outstanding performances at the World Para Athletics Championships in New Delhi.”

For Dharambir, the announcement carried special meaning: “Carrying the Indian flag at this championship is a tremendous honour. After the experience in Paris, I am more motivated than ever to give my best and make the entire nation proud. This new jersey will be a symbol of our unity and fighting spirit.”

Preeti, with a smile, spoke of the road ahead: “Winning medals at the Paralympics showed me the power of perseverance and belief. Wearing the Team India jersey is a proud moment, and I am excited to compete on home ground and inspire the next generation of para athletes across the country.”

While the ceremony ended with applause and anticipation for the prestigious tournament being hosted at home. The jersey itself left much to be desired. Our para athlete stars deserve more than something merely “decent.” For many sportspersons, clothing is not just fabric, it is a form of self-expression and a source of confidence on the field. A jersey should embody that spirit, and one hopes future designs reflect the excellence and individuality these athletes bring to the world stage.
