India’s off-spin great Ravichandran Ashwin has revealed he is stunned to see MS Dhoni continue playing in the IPL season after season. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin explained how difficult it becomes to perform in the IPL as a player grows older.
“I was thinking if I can play IPL next year. Three months of IPL is a little too much for me. It’s draining. This is one of the reasons why I’m awe-struck by seeing someone like MS Dhoni. As you grow older, the bandwidth to play IPL becomes lesser. Three months of cricket isn’t easy — you have to travel, play matches, and let your body recover after the matches.”
Ashwin recently retired from the IPL to explore different leagues around the world like The Hundreds, Big Bash League and SA20.
The veteran spinner featured for five franchises across 17 IPL seasons from 2009 to 2025. He played 221 matches, taking 187 wickets at an average of 30.23 and an economy rate of 7.20, with the best of 4/34. He was a part of the Chennai Super Kings squad that won the IPL in 2010, and next year he took 3/16 in the final against Royal Challengers Bengaluru to help his team win consecutive titles. He was a little off-colour in the 2025 season, taking only seven wickets in nine matches at an economy rate of 9.13.
Dhoni has not given any confirmation whether he will play the next IPL or not, although fans are eager to see him in action.
