Manchester United’s 2025/26 season has not started the way they would have hoped. After three league games, they have managed just one win, a draw, and a loss to Arsenal. However, the most humiliating result came when they were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by fourth-tier side Grimsby Town.

Following that shock exit, United head coach Ruben Amorim sparked speculation over his future when he admitted that “something has to change”, raising questions about whether the Portuguese might quit. For now, though, his position appears secure after a much-needed win over Burnley in the league going into the international break.

But while United are enduring a mixed start, several of the club’s former managers have also faced turbulent times.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

On August 28, 2025, Turkish side Besiktas sacked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The former United player and coach had taken over in January and guided the team to a fourth-place finish last season.

However, after losing to Shakhtar Donetsk in the Europa League qualifiers and then falling to Swiss side Lausanne in the Conference League play-offs, Besiktas found themselves without European football. The club acted immediately and dismissed him.

Solskjaer, who began his United stint as interim boss in December 2018 before being appointed permanently, managed the Red Devils until November 2021.

Jose Mourinho

Just a day later, on August 29, another Turkish giant, Fenerbahce, parted ways with Jose Mourinho. Their elimination in the UEFA Champions League play-off against Portugal’s Benfica sealed his fate. Mourinho had been in charge of the club since July 2024. For United, Mourinho’s reign lasted from 2016 to 2018.

Erik ten Hag

Erik ten Hag, United’s manager from 2022 to 2024, also endured a torrid time in his new role. After leaving Old Trafford, he signed a two-year contract with Bayer Leverkusen, succeeding Xabi Alonso. But his stint in Germany ended abruptly.

After just two league games, Leverkusen dismissed him on September 1, with the club earning only a point from those fixtures. It went down as the fastest sacking in Bundesliga history, breaking the previous record of five matches.
