Australia fast bowler Mitchell Starc has announced his retirement from T20 Internationals as he looks to prioritise Test and ODI cricket. Starc last played for his country in the shortest format in the USA and the West Indies in 2024. Incidentally, the T20 World Cup will be held next year in India and Sri Lanka.
Starc, who is the second highest wicket-taker for Australia in T20Is, bagged 79 scalps at an average of 23.81 in that format. Adam Zampa is perched on top of the wicket-taking charts for Australia with 130 wickets. Starc partook in five T20 World Cups. In 2021, when Australia won the T20 World Cup, in the UAE, Starc finished with nine wickets in seven matches.
“Test cricket is and has always been my highest priority,” Starc said in a statement. “I have loved every minute of every T20 game I have played for Australia, particularly the 2021 World Cup, not just because we won but the incredible group and the fun along the way.
“Looking ahead to an away Indian Test tour, the Ashes and an ODI World Cup in 2027, I feel this is my best way forward to remain fresh, fit and at my best for those campaigns. It also gives the bowling group time to prepare for the T20 World Cup in the matches leading into that tournament.”
Recently, numerous Australian cricketers have retired from different formats of the game. Last year, David Warner decided to hang up his boots from international cricket. On the other hand, Steve Smith, Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis all retired from ODIs in 2025.
