Veteran Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) batter Virat Kohli has expressed his deep sorrow over the tragic stampede incident that occurred earlier this year. The franchise has already announced the launch of a long-term initiative, RCB Cares, aimed at supporting the affected families and ensuring safer experiences for fans in the future.

The unfortunate incident took place outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on June 4, 2025, during RCB’s IPL victory parade. What was meant to be a historic celebration turned into tragedy as 11 people lost their lives and over 50 were left injured.

In an official statement shared on RCB’s social media page on September 3, Kohli said: “Nothing in life really prepares you for a heartbreak like June 4th. What should’ve been the happiest moment in our franchise’s history… turned into something tragic. I’ve been thinking of and praying for the families of those we lost… and for our fans who were injured. Your loss is part of our story now. Together, we will move forward with care, respect and responsibility.”

RCB has also increased financial aid, confirming that each of the families of those who lost their lives will now receive ₹25 lakh as compensation.

Beyond financial support, RCB Cares will work across six major focus areas: Improving crowd safety measures, providing long-term support beyond compensation, building inclusive communities, commissioning research on fan safety, creating permanent tributes for fans, and supporting young sporting talent.

The franchise had faced heavy criticism in the aftermath of the incident, particularly over management and safety lapses during the parade. However, this latest step reflects RCB’s intent to learn from mistakes and demonstrate responsibility by taking measures for the future, while also honouring and supporting those affected.
