Jordan Cox has been added to England’s squad for the three-match T20I series against Ireland, which starts in Dublin on 17 September, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has confirmed.

On the back of a stellar run with the bat in the recently concluded Hundred tournament, Cox has been drafted into the squad after initially being overlooked. He forced his way back into the national squad after finishing as the leading run-scorer in the competition, amassing 367 runs, and was named Most Valuable Player, helping Oval Invincibles secure a third successive title.

The second-string squad for the Ireland series will be led by 21-year-old Jacob Bethell, who is set to become the youngest man to captain England at international level. Several multi-format players, currently involved in the home series against South Africa, have been rested for the Ireland T20Is.

Cox has previously played two T20Is and three ODIs, but is yet to make a mark on the international stage.

The 24-year-old was in line for a Test debut in New Zealand last winter, only to suffer a broken thumb at the nets. Later, he had to pull out of the squad for the one-off Test against Zimbabwe in May due to a side strain picked up while playing for Essex.

Head coach Brendon McCullum has opted out of the series, with Marcus Trescothick stepping in to take charge.

Ireland will host England in Dublin for three T20Is on 17, 19, and 21 September.

Revised England T20I Squad for Ireland Tour: Jacob Bethell (c), Rehan Ahmed, Sonny Baker, Tom Banton, Jos Buttler, Jordan Cox, Liam Dawson, Tom Hartley, Will Jacks, Saqib Mahmood, Jamie Overton, Matthew Potts, Adil Rashid, Phil Salt, Luke Wood.
