Amit Mishra announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on Thursday, 4 September, bringing an end to a career spanning 25 years.
Mishra made his debut for India in 2003. He featured in 22 Test matches, 36 One-Day Internationals, and 10 T20 Internationals. He claimed 76 wickets in Tests, 64 in ODIs, and 16 in T20Is. The leg-spinner played a key role in India’s run to the final of the 2014 T20 World Cup, delivering several crucial spells throughout the tournament.
“Today, after 25 years, I announce my retirement from cricket — a game that has been my first love, my teacher, and my greatest source of joy,” said Mishra.
“This journey has been filled with countless emotions — moments of pride, hardship, learning, and love. I am deeply grateful to the BCCI, Haryana Cricket Association, my coaches, support staff, colleagues, and most importantly, the fans, whose faith and support gave me strength at every step,” wrote Mishra on his X account.
His last appearance for the national side was in 2017 against England. His final outing in professional cricket was in the 2024 IPL season, playing for the Lucknow Super Giants against the Rajasthan Royals. He bowled economically in that match, finishing with figures of 1 for 20.
One of the most successful bowlers in IPL history, Mishra ends his career with 174 wickets from 162 matches, averaging 23.82 with an economy rate of 7.37.
Ranked seventh on the list of all-time leading wicket-takers in the IPL, he also holds the record for the most hat-tricks in the tournament’s history, having achieved the feat three times.
“From the struggles and sacrifices in the early days to the unforgettable moments on the field, every chapter has been an experience that has shaped me as a cricketer and as a person,” he wrote.
“To my family — thank you for standing firmly by my side through the highs and lows. To my teammates and mentors — thank you for making this journey so special. As I close this chapter, my heart is full of gratitude and love. Cricket has given me everything, and now, I look forward to giving back to the game that made me who I am,” he ended.
