In a setback for South Africa, Tony de Zorzi has been ruled out of the ODI series against England due to a hamstring strain sustained during the first match in Leeds.

While fielding on the boundary, de Zorzi made a diving effort to stop a powerful shot by Jos Buttler from reaching the rope. Although he successfully saved the boundary, he landed awkwardly and was visibly in pain. He was assessed by the medical team and subsequently taken off the field.

De Zorzi did not return to the field for the remainder of the first innings. Although he was available to bat, his services were not required, as South Africa chased down the target of 132 with seven wickets in hand to take a 1–0 lead in the three-match series.

According to Cricket South Africa, de Zorzi will return home to undergo scans and determine the extent of the injury.

No replacement has been named by the selectors, as de Zorzi was already the reserve and had stepped in for Matthew Breetzke, who missed the final ODI in Australia and the first in England due to a minor left hamstring strain.

Breetzke, who averages 94.5 in ODIs, has fully recovered and is available for selection for the Lord’s ODI on Thursday. The 26-year-old is expected to retain his place at No. 4 in the playing XI.

South Africa squad for 2nd ODI at Lord’s:

Aiden Markram, Ryan Rickelton (wk), Temba Bavuma (C), Dewald Brevis, Tristan Stubbs, Lhuan-dré Pretorius, Matthew Breetzke, Wiaan Mulder, Senuran Muthusamy, Corbin Bosch, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, Nandre Burger, Kwena Maphaka, Lungi Ngidi.
