After the stampede incident that happened during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) IPL win celebrations, M Chinnaswamy Stadium will host its first match. The stadium has been selected as one of the venues for the Karnataka State Cricket Association’s (KSCA) K Thimmappiah Memorial Trophy.

This is a pre-season tournament played with red balls. Sixteen teams from Mumbai, Himachal, Vidarbha, Madhya Pradesh and other regions will participate in the tournament and six matches will be played at Chinnaswamy Stadium, including one semi-final and the final. The matches will be played under closed doors.

Among the big names Ajinkya Rahane, Vijay Shankar, Hanuma Vihari, Venkatesh Iyer and others will be playing in the tournament.

Cricket’s return to the Chinnaswamy Stadium has come after RCB decided to give Rs 25 lakh to the families of those who lost their lives. The power supply has been cut due to fire safety issues at the stadium. As a result, the stadium lost permission to host matches of the Women’s World Cup. The Maharaja Trophy, which is the franchise-based T20 tournament of the state, could also not be hosted by the stadium.

The state government formed a committee last month to investigate the stampede incident, which said that Chinnaswamy Stadium was not safe for big events. The Karnataka government also plans to build a stadium with a capacity of 60,000 spectators.
