The day stated with compound archery, and the Indian duo of Jyothi Surekha Vennam and Rishabh Yadav. The Indian pair won the silver at the World Championships in China in what is now an Olympic event. Yet again, Jyothi Surekha showed how good she is. We spoke soon after, and the interview was set for 2pm India time. Gargi Raut would do it and Jyothi, it was apparent, was keen. The men’s pairing added to the glory, and the interview was aired on RevSportz on Monday.
As we recorded with Jyothi, we had one eye on Sandesh Jhingan and his recovery. Sandesh is a story for the ages, and one had to get him to open up on what prompted him to play on with a fractured jaw. It was his first video interview after the surgery and, may I say, a hugely inspirational one. “What else could I have done? Walking away wasn’t really an option,” said Sandesh, and in a flash, one remembered Rishabh Pant in Manchester. Again, the interview was aired on Monday.
If it was Sandesh Jhingan for English, it was Subhasish Bose, skipper of Mohun Bagan, for our Bangla audience. With the AFC Champions League Two encounter against Turkmenistan’s Ahal FK just a week away, it was imperative we catch up with the skipper on preparation and more. The AFC tournament is an opportunity for Mohun Bagan, and the team under Jose Molina is doing all the hard yards to be competitive.
By afternoon, the focus had moved to boxing and hockey, not to mention the Asia Cup in Dubai. We had put out a detailed show on India’s training over the first two days of practice, and had also done a deep dive on Sanju Samson and whether he is likely to play. The Asia Cup coverage will intensify over the next few days as I join the team in Dubai ahead of the India-Pakistan clash, which is part of a larger geopolitical story.
In hockey, Rajgir was full by 5pm in the afternoon for a 7:30pm game and the viewers needed to know what was going on. Yet again, we had on-ground reportage and Abhishek Mishra helped us build up to the action. And once India had demolished South Korea in style, almost all the interviews were conducted and presented to our viewers overnight. Hockey has always been a favourite, and will continue to be a sport of choice.
So far in Sheffield, the Indians have done well in the Boxing World Championships. With Kuldeep Ahlawat freelancing for us, we have it well covered. Every bout is being reported and as the tournament goes deeper, the coverage will only increase.
Finally, the President of the Paralympic Committee of India, Devendra Jhajharia, was in Kolkata to launch the JBG Kolkata Marathon and it was only apt that Rohan Chowdhury interviewed him with an eye on the World Para Athletics championships, which will start in New Delhi on September 28. Rohan and Gargi will be on ground to cover it and the interview is part of the build-up.
Cricket, football, hockey, boxing, archery and para sport – all in a day’s work for us at RevSportz. This is what multi-sport coverage is all about, and we will continue the quest for excellence every single day.
