MCA picks candidate for BCCI AGM, Sports Bill to dictate cricket board’s choices

Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) vice-president Sanjay Naik could represent the association at the BCCI’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) on September 28, it is learnt. A confirmation in this regard is expected by evening today.

As RevSportz reported, Ajinkya Naik, the MCA president, was the association’s unanimous choice to be at the BCCI AGM. An email in this regard was sent to the Apex Council members for ratification. But this website also reported yesterday that the president might nominate someone else, as he could be travelling abroad in the last week of this month. The way it has transpired, Sanjay Naik is likely the preferred choice.

RevSportz also reported yesterday that contrary to wild rumours, Sachin Tendulkar wouldn’t be in the race for the BCCI president’s post. The legendary former India captain putting an end to speculation came on its heels. A statement put out by SRT Sports Management Pvt Ltd said: “It has come to our attention that certain reports and rumours have been circulating regarding Mr. Sachin Tendulkar being considered, or nominated, for the position of President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).”

It added: “We wish to categorically state that no such development has taken place. We urge all concerned to refrain from giving credence to unfounded speculations.”

The BCCI president’s post has fallen vacant, with Roger Binny stepping down after turning 70. As per the cricket board’s constitution, no office-bearer can continue after that age. Rajeev Shukla is said to be currently serving as interim president. Tendulkar’s refusal to throw his hat into the ring, however, doesn’t rule out the possibility of a former India cricketer of stature becoming the new cricket board chief at the AGM. The previous two BCCI presidents were ex-India stalwarts — Binny and Sourav Ganguly. Indian cricket’s governing body continuing with the recent practice appears likely.

It is learnt that over the next few months, the BCCI would be implementing the National Sports Governance Bill, and it will dictate the election of the new office-bearers and the formation of the committees.
