The fervour for the India-Pakistan match isn’t what it once was, dampened by the chilling Pahalgam terror attack and the subsequent Operation Sindoor, which have left millions of Indians in a contemplative mood. Unlike past tournaments, players from both teams have kept their distance, and both sides have downplayed the clash by sending lesser-known figures to pre-match press conferences, a reflection of the sombre context.

India’s coaching staff, led by Gautam Gambhir, delivered a clear message as per sources close to the team. “Treat it as just a game,” they told the players. “Block out the noise and focus on playing clinical cricket.” Despite social media outrage, with many calling for a boycott, the Indian team are staying focused. They know a loss to Pakistan could sharpen the knives of criticism, making it vital to tune out distractions and stay sharp.

Gambhir, two days before the Pakistan clash, was firm. “No room for complacency,” he said, according to a source close to the team. “We are representing India. We know what has happened. We will go out and play for every Indian.” While this is hardly Operation Sindoor 2.0, a win against Pakistan on the global stage could bring some solace to a nation seething with anger. Some close to the team are surprised by the criticism aimed at the players, who share the public’s pain. On social media, the government is being hit with heavy criticism for allowing the BCCI to field a team in the Asia Cup, knowing a Pakistan match was inevitable.

“We understand the strong sentiments,” said assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate on match eve. “Gautam’s message was professional – focus on what we control. The players feel the same compassion as the public.” He noted the Asia Cup’s uncertain status earlier but emphasised moving forward. “Some separate sports from politics; others don’t,” he said. “We hope our play reflects our pride in the country.”

At an optional practice session, players like Shubman Gill, Abhishek Sharma, Rinku Singh, Tilak Varma, and Suryakumar Yadav hit the nets, while Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav, and Axar Patel rested. Arshdeep Singh and Jitesh Sharma, while observing Hong Kong’s practice drills, shared light moments with the media at the ICC Academy. Abhishek’s father, Rajkumar Sharma, paid a brief visit to catch up with the Punjab boys – Abhishek, Shubman Gill and Arshdeep.

On Sunday, with emotions raging online, the Men in Blue will aim to execute their tactics flawlessly. A win won’t heal the wounds of Pahalgam’s victims, but it could offer some balm for a hurting nation.
