Former India captain Sourav Ganguly is all set for his second stint as the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president. Ganguly, along with his panel, filed the nomination papers on Sunday.
The former BCCI chief is set to be elected unopposed as the CAB president at the state association’s Annual General Meeting on September 22. He had earlier served in that capacity from 2015-2019 before helming the BCCI.
“I would like to thank everyone for their support. At CAB, there is no opposition, everyone is a part of this association. We will work together to take the CAB and Bengal cricket ahead. There are important events coming up — India’s Test match against South Africa at Eden Gardens, T20 World Cup, Bengal Pro T20 League. I will try and do my best,” Ganguly told reporters.
On being asked if he considers his second stint as president challenging, given several controversies that made headlines in recent times, Ganguly said: “I do not consider it as a challenge. I have eight years’ experience both as CAB and BCCI president. I will try and do my best.”
Following his return as president, Ganguly will represent the CAB at the upcoming BCCI Annual General Meeting in Mumbai on September 28. On being asked about his chances of returning as BCCI chief, Sourav said: “Don’t assume anything.”
The image of the state association was tarnished after joint-secretary Debabrata Das was suspended for his involvement in financial irregularities.
According to Ganguly: “Most organisations have issues to deal with. In the future, if there are issues it will be dealt in an appropriate manner.”
The performance of the senior Bengal team has been blowing hot and cold in recent times. It was under Ganguly’s previous tenure as the president of the association, Vision-2020 project was started, which paved the way for several cricketers getting an opportunity.
“We had a Vision project in place but due to Covid it had to be stopped. We would want it to restart. We also need to focus on junior cricket, club cricket, Bengal pro T20 league,” said Ganguly.
