In the second match against Australia Women, India’s opener Smriti Mandhana scored her 12th ODI hundred, a landmark that draws her level with New Zealand’s Suzie Bates and England’s Tammy Beaumont for the most centuries by an opener in women’s ODIs.

Mandhana is the fastest to reach the milestone, in 106 innings — seven less than Beaumont and 24 fewer than Bates.

Mandhana is known for her classical technique. She started today’s innings in an aggressive style, dispatching the eighth ball she faced for a six. Her half-century came in just 45 balls when she hit Georgia Wareham in the 16th over for a six to the cow corner. In Wareham’s next over she got a lifeline on the second ball and made the Australian team pay heavily for it.

Her century came in the 29th over in just 77 balls, which is the second fastest by an Indian in Women’s ODIs.

She was dismissed in the 33rd over when she cleared her front leg to hit a six over deep mid-wicket but failed, and was caught by Ashleigh Gardner off the bowling of Tahila McGrath. Her innings of 117 came in just 91 balls, including 14 fours and four sixes at a strike rate of 128.57. She helped India set up a target of 293 for the Australian team.

In the end, India won by 102 runs to level the three match series 1-1, with the decider to be played on September 20 in Delhi. Mandhana was adjudged the Player of the Match.
