The Arun Jaitley Stadium will host the deciding third ODI on Friday, with the women’s series level at 1-1 after India and Australia traded commanding wins in Mullanpur. Both teams know the stakes extend beyond the scoreline, with the World Cup looming and lessons to be taken from every contest. On the eve of the decider, Ashleigh Gardner faced the media and offered candid reflections.
“India Outplayed Us in All Facets”
Gardner was forthright about Australia’s defeat in the second ODI.
“Sometimes it’s not a wake-up call, but it shows the powerhouse that India are,” she said. “We didn’t play our best cricket. We got outplayed in all facets of the game, but there are plenty of learnings to take into tomorrow.”
Adapting to Indian Conditions
The series has already tested Australia on black and red soil surfaces. Gardner noted New Delhi’s red soil could turn more.
“It’s about adapting on the run. India set straight fields, bowled straight lines and made scoring tough. That’s something we need to mirror as a bowling group.”
Mandhana Factor and Power Play Plans
Smriti Mandhana’s commanding form has been a constant challenge. Gardner acknowledged the threat but stressed simplicity.
“Smriti’s batting really well. If I bowl in the power play, it’s about keeping my plans simple and sticking to my strengths rather than chasing wickets.”
Coping With Heat and Fatigue
Delhi’s oppressive conditions have tested both teams. Gardner explained how Australia are managing.
“When you’re fatigued, you make poor decisions. Staff have given us strategies, ice baths before games, hydration breaks, to keep the mind clear in the heat.”
On Australia’s Spin Unit
Australia’s spin trio of Gardner, Alana King and Georgia Wareham have played varying roles.
“Alana is usually the aggressor, she turns it most. My role shifts, sometimes attacking, sometimes defensive. When we bowl well as a unit, we create pressure and that brings wickets.”
Bigger Picture Beyond the Decider
While tomorrow’s clash won’t affect championship points, Gardner emphasised the value.
“Going into a World Cup, we want to win as many games as possible. A decider is fantastic for both teams, there’s a lot to play for.”
