India’s fielding coach T Dilip gave an update on Axar Patel, who suffered an injury during the Group A clash against Oman in the Asia Cup 2025.
In the 15th over of the second innings, Axar sustained an injury while attempting a catch. Oman’s Hammad Mirza tried to clear cover but couldn’t manage it, as the ball took the edge of the bat and went up. Axar, who was positioned at mid-off, ran to his left to take the catch. After a couple of fumbles, he eventually dropped it, and his head thudded onto the ground. The spin-bowling all-rounder appeared to be in immediate discomfort and walked off the field.
“Just now I’ve seen Axar – he looks fine at this point in time. That’s what I can say about it,” said T Dilip in the post-match press conference.
With a short turnaround between the Oman game and India’s first Super Four fixture against Pakistan on Sunday, there remains uncertainty over Axar’s availability for the match.
The Sunday fixture is set to be played at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. At that venue, India have played two matches so far in the tournament. In both games, they’ve opted for three spinners.
If Axar misses out, it will be interesting to see whether India choose to play an extra seamer or a batter in his place.
Having already beaten Pakistan once in the tournament earlier this month, the Indian team will be looking to make it two in two against the arch-rivals and continue their unbeaten run. While for Pakistan it will be an opportunity to avenge the earlier defeat, for India it’s seen as ‘just another fixture’.
“Regarding the Pakistan game, everybody is geared up. We treat every game the same, and we know the schedule and how it’s panned out. So every game is just another game, and we’re ready for it,” Dilip added.
