It’s hard to believe now that Mykhaylo Mudryk was the most high-profile signing of the 2022-23 winter transfer window. After a bidding war between Chelsea and Arsenal, the Blues secured the deal for a reported £89m (including add-ons). He was breathtaking in the Champions League and was tearing apart the opponents in the Ukrainian league for fun. No wonder that he became one of the most sought-after players in Europe.

Mudryk brought his blistering pace to the Premier League, although his quality on the ball and finishing was put under the scanner. Then, things went completely south. In April 2025, he tested positive for a banned substance on the heels of a routine dope test a month previously. Chelsea wrote off his contract.

Now, according to Spanish sports daily Marca, Mudryk has decided to swap football for athletics and is aiming to participate in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics as a sprinter for Ukraine. He had logged a top speed of 36.67 km/h in the Premier League. He hopes to turn that explosiveness into Olympic honours.

The report says the 24-year-old is training with the Ukraine national sprint team under the guidance of former Olympians. He has the potential, but to get to the Olympics, Mudryk will have to meet World Athletics’ cut-off mark and pass the Ukrainian trials in 2027.
