Former Mohun Bagan SG midfielder Carl McHugh is set to join Chennaiyin FC after two successful seasons with FC Goa. McHugh, who first arrived in the Indian Super League (ISL) with the now-defunct ATK, quickly established his reputation as a reliable midfield presence. He later represented Mohun Bagan SG before moving to FC Goa, where he became an integral part of their setup.

McHugh’s career has spanned several leagues and clubs. A product of Reading, he gained early experience through loan spells at Swindon Supermarine and Dundalk. He later featured for Bradford City, Plymouth Argyle, and Motherwell, among others. On the international stage, McHugh has represented the Republic of Ireland at U17, U19, and U21 levels, earning a recall to the U21 squad in 2013 for the European Championship qualifiers.

In the recently concluded 2024-25 ISL season, McHugh was a key figure for FC Goa, making 22 appearances and playing a total of 1,753 minutes. He also played a crucial role in Goa’s Super Cup triumph earlier this year in Bhubaneswar.

As per close sources, McHugh had offers from two overseas clubs but he has opted to continue his career in India. The deal with Chennaiyin FC is in its final stages and is expected to be completed in the coming days.

Chennaiyin, now under the guidance of Clifford Miranda – appointed as the club’s first-ever Indian head coach after replacing Owen Coyle – has identified McHugh as a vital addition to the squad. Alongside the Irish midfielder, the club is also determined to retain forward Daniel Chima Chukwu, who is exploring options elsewhere but remains a priority for the Marina Machans.

If negotiations go as planned, Chennaiyin fans may witness Chima turning out for the club in the upcoming ISL season.
