It’s only a week to go for the ICC Women’s World Cup to commence. India will start their campaign against Sri Lanka in Guwahati on September 30, and they will be one of the tournament favourites on their home patch.

Then again, there is Australia, India’s bogey team. In a recently concluded three-match ODI series, Harmanpreet Kaur & Co lost to the Aussies 2-1. Can they get past their nemesis and go the distance at the World Cup?

Cheteshwar Pujara was in Mumbai on Tuesday to promote pickleball on behalf of The PHorce Club. Cricket questions, especially related to the current team, were kept at arm’s length. Still, a few were asked, and the former batter chose to play safe.

He was asked whether India could trump Australia and win the World Cup. Pujara presented the bigger picture. “The infrastructure for women’s cricket in our country is one of the best,” he said.

“The BCCI has done a lot, and the progress is there at every level, not only the highest level. I really hope that the Indian team does well at the Women’s World Cup.”

On a lighter note, he spoke about his favourite song, now that he is retired from the game. “I am getting calls from a lot of bowlers and they are telling me, ‘we are happy that you have retired. So (as regards the song) I would say, ‘o palan hare’…”
