The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Tuesday suspended USA Cricket’s membership. At its Annual General Meeting, the apex cricket body made the decision, citing “repeated and continued breaches” of USA Cricket’s obligations as a Member of the ICC.
The ICC has outlined three major areas of concern regarding USA Cricket. These include the organisation’s failure to establish an effective governance system, limited progress in gaining recognition from the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee as the sport’s official governing body, and behaviour that has negatively affected cricket’s image both in the United States and globally.
In July last year, the ICC had officially placed USA Cricket on notice for 12 months to address non-compliance with membership criteria.
“The decision, taken by the ICC Board during its meeting earlier, was based on USA Cricket’s repeated and continued breaches of its obligations as an ICC Member under the ICC’s Constitution,” an ICC press release stated.
“These include, but are not limited to, the failure to implement a functional governance structure, lack of progress towards achieving National Governing Body status with the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC), and significant actions that have caused reputational damage to cricket in the United States and around the world.”
In order to maintain continuity, the ICC and its appointed representatives will temporarily take over the management and administration of the USA’s national teams.
Although the USA cricket body is suspended, USA’s national teams will still be able to participate in ICC tournaments.
A Normalisation Committee will be responsible for outlining the necessary reforms for USA Cricket to restore its membership. These reforms will cover areas such as governance, operations, and organisational structure, with the committee also overseeing and assisting throughout the transition process.
