Pakistan fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi has responded to Suryakumar Yadav’s “no rivalry” remark, saying the real test would come on the field if India and Pakistan clash in the Asia Cup final.
After the Super Four clash against Pakistan, Suryakumar made a striking claim during the press conference, stating that the India–Pakistan fixture is no longer a rivalry, given the dominance of the Men in Blue in recent years.
“That’s his view — let him say what he wants,” said Shaheen during the press conference ahead of their Super Four encounter with Bangladesh. “When we meet (in the potential Asia Cup final on Sunday), we’ll see what’s what. Tab dekh lenge. We are here to win the Asia Cup and will give our best effort to do so.”
India have won seven consecutive matches in men’s international cricket against Pakistan, with their last defeat coming during the 2022 Asia Cup. This record prompted Suryakumar to say: “According to me, if two teams play 15–20 matches and the head-to-head is 7–7 or 8–7, then that’s a rivalry. But 13–0, 10–1… I don’t know what the stats are, but this is not a rivalry anymore.”
In the ongoing Asia Cup, India and Pakistan have faced each other twice, with the Men in Blue emerging victorious on both occasions. If Pakistan defeat Bangladesh in their final Super Four clash, they will meet India for the third time. This time, the stakes will be even higher, as the trophy will be on the line, on October 28 (Sunday).
