Legendary Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar has made it clear that he is not worried about India’s batting ahead of the Asia Cup final. The former captain believes the team has enough players to handle the pressure even if star opener Abhishek Sharma does not score big.
Abhishek has been India’s top performer in the tournament with three fifties and over 300 runs, but Gavaskar believes the final is not only about him. According to Gavaskar, it’s about the collective effort of the team.
Speaking to India Today, Gavaskar highlighted that India have other match-winners ready to step up. “There are several key players who can make a difference. Suryakumar Yadav is due for runs, as are Tilak Varma, Sanju Samson, and Hardik Pandya. Shubman Gill has batted well but hasn’t yet delivered the big scores we’ve come to expect from him recently. There’s plenty of batting firepower left, so there’s no need to be overly concerned,” Gavaskar said.
At the same time, the former captain has backed Abhishek to continue his brilliant run. “Abhishek Sharma, in particular, won’t let opportunities slip. He’s been in good form with three half-centuries and, despite an unfortunate run-out that cost him a potential century, he’s likely to aim for another big innings — possibly even a three-figure score,” said Gavaskar.
India are facing some fitness concerns as Pandya left the field with a hamstring scare against Sri Lanka and Abhishek got cramped up in the Dubai heat. Bowling coach MorneMorkel eased concerns on Friday night, saying, “Hardik will be assessed tomorrow morning. Both him and Abhishek suffered cramps. But Abhishek is fine.”
