India’s star opener Abhishek Sharma credited captain Suryakumar Yadav, head coach Gautam Gambhir, and the support staff for his impressive run with the bat in the Asia Cup 2025.
Speaking after the match, the left-handed batter said their guidance and constant backing helped him play with complete freedom and make a meaningful impact for the team.
“Getting into this team after winning the World Cup wasn’t easy for any opener. We had a plan — to play our natural game and show intent from the very first ball. I worked really hard on that,” said Abhishek during the post-match presentation at the Dubai International Stadium on Sunday night.
Acknowledging the support of the coach and captain, Abhishek said: “If you want to play like this, you need special backing from the coach and captain — and that’s exactly what I’ve been getting. If I perform well and deliver those impactful innings for the team, we should win. Of course, playing this way comes with failures — but as a team, we understand that. If you stick to the process and keep playing with intent, you’ll win games for your team.”
Abhishek was one of the key architects of India’s successful Asia Cup campaign. Although he only scored five runs in the final against Pakistan, his aggressive approach and crucial partnership with opening partner Shubman Gill helped India remain unbeaten throughout the tournament. The southpaw finished the competition with 314 runs in seven matches at an average of 44.85 and a strike rate of 200, earning him the Player of the Tournament award.
