The ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 began with a familiar Indian script — Deepti Sharma holding the innings together and then dismantling the opposition with the ball. On a sluggish Guwahati surface that demanded application and awareness, Deepti once again showcased why she remains India’s most reliable all-rounder.

India’s batting had its moments of stutter. After Smriti Mandhana departed early and the middle order wobbled against disciplined Sri Lankan bowling, it was Deepti who walked in with intent but without panic. She first found an ally in Amanjot Kaur, who, returning from injury, played within herself while Deepti rotated strike and picked gaps with precision. Their stand repaired India’s innings, shifting the scoreboard from a precarious crawl to steady progress.

When Amanjot fell, Deepti’s task only grew harder. Sneh Rana joined her in the middle and together the pair stitched a partnership that combined calmness with late acceleration. Deepti’s ability to pierce the infield with deft placements was on full display, while Rana’s late flourish ensured India climbed to a competitive 269. Deepti’s 53 was not flamboyant but it was the glue that bound India’s innings, a knock of responsibility, tempo, and clarity.

If her batting was measured, her bowling was clinical. With Chamari Athapaththu attempting to launch at the Indian bowlers, Deepti struck with her subtle variations in flight and pace. She removed the dangerous Chamari Athapaththu, effectively derailing the chase.

By the time she finished her spell, India had the game firmly in control, the crowd at Barsapara Stadium roaring with each breakthrough.

For India, starting a home World Cup with momentum was non-negotiable. Deepti ensured it. With both bat and ball, she bridged the gaps left by others, embodying the reliability that has become her trademark. As the campaign unfolds, India will look to Mandhana’s flair or Harmanpreet Kaur’s power, but in Guwahati’s opening act, it was Deepti Sharma’s all-round composure that set the tone for India’s World Cup journey.
