Former India opener Virender Sehwag believes that Rohit Sharma is the second-best captain in Indian cricket, after the legendary MS Dhoni. Rohit’s tenure as captain of the Indian ODI side came to an end after the selectors decided to hand over the leadership to Shubman Gill, keeping the ICC ODI World Cup 2027 in mind.

During his stint as captain, India competed in three major tournaments — the ICC ODI World Cup 2023, the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, and the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 — as well as one World Test Championship Final in 2023.

After finishing as runners-up twice in 2023, India went on to win back-to-back ICC trophies: first the 2024 T20 World Cup, and then this year’s Champions Trophy.

Speaking to Cricbuzz, Sehwag said:

“People underestimate him regarding his captaincy, but after these two trophies, perhaps he becomes the second-best captain after MS Dhoni.”

Sehwag analysed Rohit’s leadership and said that, for Rohit, the team always came first, and he did everything possible to bring out the best in his teammates.

“He thinks less about himself, more about his team and teammates, and makes them feel comfortable. He understands that if a player feels insecure, their performance suffers — so he ensures no one feels insecure and takes everyone along with him,” he said.

Under Rohit’s captaincy, India played 56 ODIs and won 42 of them. The 38-year-old ends his tenure with a winning percentage of 75 in one-day cricket. Only Clive Lloyd has a higher winning percentage. In terms of ICC trophies, Dhoni remains the only Indian captain to have won more than Rohit.
