In a significant development for Indian football, the upcoming edition of the Super Cup is set to undergo a major rule change regarding the participation of foreign players. As per close sources, The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has decided that only four out of the six registered foreign players will be allowed in the playing XI — bringing the competition in line with the Indian Super League (ISL) regulations.
In the past few editions of the Super Cup, teams were permitted to field all six of their foreign players in the starting lineup, unlike the ISL, where only four of the six registered foreigners can play at once. The absence of such a restriction had allowed several teams to rely heavily on overseas players, often limiting opportunities for Indian footballers.
However, this season, the AIFF is determined to change that dynamic. Teams will still be allowed to register six foreign players in their 21-member squad, but only four can take the field at a time.
According to sources, this move was influenced by Mohun Bagan Super Giant and a few other clubs’ formal request to reduce the number of foreigners in the tournament, ensuring more playing time for Indian players. The AIFF reportedly accepted the clubs’ proposal in a bid to encourage the development of domestic talent.
The timing of this decision is also notable, given the uncertainty surrounding the start of the ISL season. With fewer competitive matches for Indian players this year, the Super Cup could play a crucial role in providing them valuable game time.
