Young Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal reached a mini milestone on Day 1 of the second Test against the West Indies at Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.

Jaiswal scored a brilliant seventh Test century. The 23year-old equalled former South Africa captain Graeme Smith’s record for the most Test centuries (7) by an opener before turning 24. His composed and confident innings once again showed why heis one of India’s brightest talents in red-ball cricket.

Smith had taken 50 innings to get to seven centuries, while Jaiswal achieved this in 48. Other than them, only the greats, Don Bradman (12) and Sachin Tendulkar (11), had more centuries before they turned 24. This highlights Jaiswal’s consistency and maturity at a young age.

Since his Test debut against the West Indies, Jaiswal has shown impressive game sense and technique. The left-hander has scored 2,245 runs, at an average close to 50. His journey started with a memorable 171 in his debut innings. He then made two double hundreds against England, which proved his ability as a matchwinner.

In the Delhi Test, Jaiswal started calmly, and remained unbeaten on 173 which included 22boundaries. He shared an opening stand of 58 with KL Rahul (38) before accelerating his scoring. Once he got settled down, he built a strong 193run partnership with Sai Sudharsan (87), which took India to 318/2 at the end of the day.
