South African opener Tazmin Brits has opened up about her struggle, courage and comebackin cricket. She once faced life-changing challenges, but her determination made herone of South Africa’s most dependable players in international cricket.
In an interview with Anjum Chopra, Brits recalled her tough phase after a car accident left her unsure about her future. “It wasn’t easy. I actually wanted to commit suicide a few times. Those thoughts did cross my mind, and I even tried,” she admitted.
She credited her family for their constant support. “I had very supportive parents, especially my mother. I had to seek help to get my mind right, but it wasn’t easy. I had a lot of dips, still do sometimes, but that’s part of sport,” she added.
She said her return to cricket happened by chance. Brits recalled, “A guy walked in looking for women cricketers — he was the coach of North West. My friends told him I used to play cricket, and one thing led to another.” Before that, she had tried returning to javelin but then she realised, “Maybe it was God’s way of redirecting me.”
In the ongoing ODI World Cup, she couldn’tscore any run against India but she made a brilliant century against New Zealand, which guided South Africa to a memorable win. South Africa will next face Bangladesh in Visakhapatnam on October 13.
