Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar shared a funny and friendly message for opener Yashasvi Jaiswal after his first-innings heroics with the bat in the second Test against the West Indies at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. Jaiswal, who has been in great form in red-ball cricket, scored a brilliant 175 runs. The left-handed batter top-scored for his team.
“Keep scoring daddy hundreds,” Gavaskar told Jaiswal after the day’s play, before sarcastically adding with a laugh, “But since I’m a grandfather, I’ll call it a granddaddy hundred.” His comment instantly became a talking point, highlighting the admiration he has for the young batter’s consistency.
Jaiswal’s knock was special, as it was his seventh century in Test cricket and his fifth score of 150-plus. With this record, he surpasses Sachin Tendulkar for the most such scores by an Indian before turning 24. Only Sir Don Bradman has more, with eight 150-plus scores in the longest format of the game.
The 23-year-old batter lost his wicket in an unfortunate run-out after a mix-up with Shubman Gill on Day 2. Reflecting on his innings after the match, he said: “I always try to play as long as I can. If I’m there, I should just take the game forward and play as long as I can. It’s (his run-out) part of the game, so it’s fine. There is always a thought about what I can achieve and what my goals are, and what my team’s goals are. I just try to stay in the game and make sure that if I’m in, I take it long.”
