India batter Sai Sudharsan will not take the field on the third day of the ongoing second Test at the Arun Jaitley Stadium against the West Indies. The BCCI has confirmed the development.

According to a BCCI release, Sudharsan has been kept off the field as a precautionary measure, as his injury is deemed “not serious”. His progress will continue to be monitored by the medical team.

“Sai Sudharsan sustained an impact injury on Day 2 while attempting a catch. He has not taken the field today as a precautionary measure. The injury is not serious, and he is doing fine. He continues to be monitored by the BCCI Medical Team,” said the BCCI media statement.

For those unfamiliar with the incident, Sudharsan was struck on the hand early in the West Indies’ innings on Day 2 while fielding at short leg. West Indies opener John Campbell connected with a sweep shot, and the ball struck Sudharsan—who was stationed at short leg—on the hand. Remarkably, despite the force of the blow, he managed to hold onto the ball and pulled off an unusual dismissal.

Immediately after being hit, the India number three batter appeared to be in pain. He received medical attention shortly afterwards and was taken off the field. The 23-year-old remained off the field for the final 35 overs of play on Day 2.

In India’s first innings, Sudharsan narrowly missed out on his maiden century, scoring 87 off 165 balls with 12 fours. After India lost KL Rahul early, centurion Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sudharsan put together a 193-run partnership for the second wicket. Sudharsan’s innings came to an end when he attempted to flick Jomel Warrican across the line off the back foot.

There is no official word yet on whether he will bat in the second innings.
