India assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate heaped praise on Kuldeep Yadav, stating that his mystery element makes him a difficult bowler to face and more effective than finger spinners.
After being benched for the entire England tour, Kuldeep claimed his fifth five-wicket haul against the West Indies in the second Test in Delhi.
“Look, I think the obvious difference with Kuldeep is that he’s a mystery spinner, and he’s not the easiest to pick,” said ten Doeschate at the press conference. “So I think that gives him an edge. He has an element of danger compared to the finger spinners. But also, I don’t think we were a million miles off this afternoon—you know, not to point fingers at the umpire at all—but there were three very close decisions, and if even two of those had gone our way, it would have looked like a much better day for us.
“Kuldeep put the ball in the right areas and turned it both ways, and you can see how small the margins are and how he got the wickets in the first innings. It’s just the difference between a play-and-miss and getting an edge—and not getting the wicket. But I certainly think the fact that many of these guys wouldn’t have faced much of him means that mystery element still makes him a bit more effective than the other two.”
In the second session of the Delhi Test, Kuldeep went wicketless in the 11 overs he bowled on day three. After India enforced the follow-on, John Campbell and Shai Hope showed great resilience to lead their team’s fightback in the series decider.
