India have been fined five per cent of their match fee for maintaining a slow over-rate during their ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup league match against Australia in Visakhapatnam on Sunday.

According to a release from the ICC Media Zone, Match Referee Michell Periera of the Emirates ICC International Panel imposed the sanction after India were found to be one over short of their target once time allowances were taken into consideration.

Under Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, teams are fined five per cent of their match fee for every over they fail to bowl within the allotted time.

India captain Harmanpreet Kaur pled guilty to the offence and accepted the proposed sanction, thereby avoiding the need for a formal hearing.

The charge was leveled by on-field umpires Sue Redfern and Nimali Perera, with third umpire Kim Cotton and fourth umpire Jacquline Williams supporting the decision.

This is India’s first over-rate offence of the ongoing World Cup, where games have been played in humid conditions and tight schedules. With key matches ahead, India will now look to tighten their on-field time management as they prepare for the crucial fixture against England later this week.
