In a gala event in Kolkata, Shrachi Sports announced former Germany football team captain, Lothar Matthäus as the brand ambassador for their upcoming inter-district football tournament, The Bengal Super League.
BSL Spotlight: THE LEGEND ARRIVES — event was graced by multiple former Indian football stars at the Kolkata venue, namely, Mehtab Hossain, Syed Rahim Nabi, Alvito d’Cunha, Deepak Mondal, Bhaskar Ganguly and others. Mathaus joined the ceremony through an online platform from Germany along with the top officials from Shrachi Sports who felicitated the partnership.
The Bengal Super League, slated to start on December 7, would be the state’s first-ever franchise based football tournament which will go on till the end of January next year. Eight franchises are formed from different districts and regions across Bengal.
Speaking on the initiative, the World Cup and Ballon d’Or winning German skipper said: “This is a project where I can see the future. We have to move as fast as possible and work hand in hand. I will share my experience and I hope I can help.”
He said that it’s the whole ecosystem that needs to step up for a holistic development of the sport. “We have to start and start professionally. It’s not only the players but everyone related to the sport — coaches, medical staff, media and others. Everyone has to contribute and work in sync.”
In a heartwarming dialogue, the German legend described how this partnership transcends the borders of culture and contributes to each other. “We’re happy to contribute to India’s football, likewise we can take cricket from India. That’s how sport is, it’s sharing culture and knowledge.”
On the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026, Matthäeus shared his favourites. “Germany! Haha”, he said tongue in cheek. “I’m just joking, but yes I think Argentina, France and Spain are the favourites. But in football, anything can happen. I believe in the German team and the coach.”
