Ahead of the India-Australia ODI series, former national coach, Ravi Shastri opened up about BCCI’s rule that restricts players’ families from travelling with them for longer periods during overseas tours.
Shastri said on Grade Cricketer podcast that Gambhir might have introduced this rule to minimise distractions for the players.
“When there are too many people around, you tend to get distracted,” Shastri said. “He (Gambhir) must have seen it is getting out of hand. So he just put a limit on what can be done and what cannot be done,” he added.
After a whitewash to New Zealand at home, and a 3-1 loss in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, BCCI introduced the aforementioned policy. There were mixed reactions about this policy. Some said that professionalism must be prioritised. Meanwhile, those who were against it, argued that it is unfair to associate a player’s poor performance with the presence of their families. Shastri, during his time with the Indian team, never introduced any such policy.
The renowned commentator also praised the new ODI captain, Shubman Gill, and called him the future of Indian Cricket.
“The good thing for him is that he has got a captain now who is stable, composed and calm. Gill is the man for the next decade for India,” he told.
