Former India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar has praised Shubman Gill for his gesture toward Rohit Sharma during the first ODI against Australia in Perth.

Even though both batters got out early, Gill and Rohit were seen sharing popcorn and chatting in the dressing room during a rain break. The moment captured on camera showed warmth and respect between the old and new captain.

Speaking on the official broadcast, Nayar said, “The effort that Shubman Gill is putting in to ensure Rohit Sharma is comfortable is commendable. There will always be a bit of awkwardness, however much youve played together, after a change in captaincy. Rohit has been your captain; now that you become captain, you still want to make him feel like you care, that youre there to listen. Even Rohit would want that.

The former all-rounder said it was important to make sure that Rohit doesn’t feel awkward. “You might have created this culture in the team over the last three years, but youd expect the new captain to make you feel at home. Gill is doing exactly that. He could have sat elsewhere. Strategically, hes sitting next to Rohit to make him comfortable.”

Nayar also recalled how Rohit had shown similar trust in Gill. “Rohit backed Gill when Ishan Kishan scored a double hundred, giving Gill the opportunity to perform. This is a reverse favour. Gill is doing whatever he can to make Rohit feel supported.” Jokingly, he added, “As long as he doesnt offer him that popcorn, hes doing the right thing.”

Rohit scored just eight runs and Gill was dismissed on 10 in the rain-hit match. Australia are leading the series 1-0. The next ODI is in Adelaide on October 23, while Sydney will host the third and final match on October 25.
