Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has expressed his disappointment over the team selection in the first ODI of the three-match series against Australia in Perth. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin said that Kuldeep Yadav should have been given a chance keeping in mind the overspin that he imparts and the big grounds of Australia.
“I can understand why they’re playing two spinners in the game along with Nitish Reddy, they want the batting depth because both Washington and Axar can bat.” said Ashwin. “But man, at least give some attention to the bowling too. On these big grounds, if Kuldeep can’t bowl with a lot of freedom, where will he bowl then? And there’s going to be overspin which will help him get bounce as well.”
India went with three pacers and two spinners with Nitish Kumar Reddy providing an extra pace option. However India could not make any impact with the ball as Australia chased the target comfortably. Kuldeep, recently, had a great Asia Cup 2025 and a home series against West Indies, and the fans were eager to see him bowl in Australia.
Though there were too many rain interruptions, India’s batting failure was another talking point. Ashwin emphasised that the batters should to take more responsibility and suggested that India should play their best bowling line-up instead of overemphasising batting depth.
“They will talk about this batting depth. But if you want to build your game around batting depth, then the batters have to take responsibility, right? It’s the job of the batters to score the runs. If you’re playing an extra batter, it’s again about shielding the batters. Play your best bowlers I’ll always say this play your best bowlers. Don’t pick a team just to extend your batting.” he added.
