Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif has criticised India’s bowling performance, and Shubman Gill’s selection choices after the team’s seven-wicket loss to Australia in Perth. He said India depended too much on their part-time bowlers. Incidentally, Gill was captaining India for the first time in ODIs.
On his YouTube channel, Kaif said, “In this team, there were many part-time bowlers. Nitish Reddy is not a complete bowler. On such a pitch, even Sundar is not a complete bowler. Harshit Rana would be disappointed with his bowling. It was the bowlers’ responsibility to win this game. I know it was a low score. But when will you win games as bowlers then? Will you win only with Bumrah and Shami?”
India managed to score only 136 runs for nine wickets in 26 overs, and as per the DLS method, Australia had to chase down 131. Eventually, the hosts surpassed the target in under 22 overs.
Kaif also highlighted that the match was a test for the new captain. “It was a test for all the bowlers and Gill as well. He did not play Kuldeep in the XI. You covered everything but did not play a wicket-taking bowler. Shane Warne was successful in all formats in Australia. I was disappointed that Kuldeep did not play. Kuhnemann bagged two wickets. You have compromised with quality for quantity,” he noteed.
