Ravichandran Ashwin has shared his thoughts on Mohammed Shami’s recent comments about the selection issues, which highlighted lack of communication between the Indian players and selectors.
The former spinner said the reason behind most of the controversies is indirect conversation which creates confusion among themselves. He further noted that Shami’s comment was an example of this very communication gap. Shami had recently expressed his disappointment after being left out of India’s ODI squad for the Australian tour. He also said that if he was fit enough to play the Ranji Trophy, then he could have easily played 50-over cricket as well.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin observed, “I will say one thing frankly, everything in Indian cricket runs on indirect speech. I really wish that it changes. It has to change from both the players’ side and the selectors’ side as well. What I have noticed is that if something indirect is said, it is bound to come out in the news.”
Ashwin also praised BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar for dealing with the remarks maturely. “Look what Shami did. He performed and then talked in the press conference, there is nothing wrong with that. But why is he talking about all of this? Because he does not have clarity. But, at the same time, I really loved how Ajit Agarkar handled it. I really hope that phone call has happened,” he said.
Shami showcased his brilliant form by taking seven wickets in the match for Bengal which helped them to achieve an eight-wicket win over Uttarakhand in their Ranji Trophy Group C match.
